This episode begins on Rita’s base, for a change. We blaze through her plan at rapid speed — her Twin Man monster will transform five Putties into duplicates of the Rangers, who will then infiltrate their lives and ruin their reputations. Because their personal reputations are paramount to Rita’s ability to take over the world.

Buckle in, kids, because we’ve got ourselves a Trini-centric episode today! I’m pretty sure this is the first one since the Mr. Ticklesneezer incident (as the one with her uncle was really more of a Billy episode), so it’s clearly long overdue.

Welcome to our new, post-Tommy world. I’m heartbroken. You’re heartbroken. Your great-aunt Susan is heartbroken. But we must soldier on. Plus, the sooner we clear this Tommy-less void, the sooner we get him back.

The episode begins with Tommy and Zordon helpfully recapping the plot thus far for the audience. Kimberly cuts in to ask if there’s anything they can do, and Zordon says that one of them needs to travel into the alternate dimension to get the candle before it burns out.

Are you guys ready for some plot? I know I am! Our first multi-parter since the terrible one we don’t speak of begins with Tommy and Zack training at the Juice Bar, which is a slight change from the usual formula of Tommy and Jason training at the Juice Bar.

We open with that same exact shot of Angel Grove High, in which that extra is flirting it up on the grounds.

The get-rid-of-Tommy plot is off to an immediate start this episode, as Kimberly asks him if he’ll be going to the beach with the rest of the group this weekend. The Rangers are packing up the Rad Bug for what they call a “field trip,” which at first made me believe it was some sort of school event. However, it seems they’re just going on a road trip for fun, despite presumably being about sixteen years old. Their parents are okay with this?

We’re finishing up this two-parter today, folks! Strap yourselves in! As Zack continues to doubt himself and disappear into nothingness, Rita gloats over her approaching victory. Goldar says they can start moving into Phase II, because we’re all about MCU references today.
